First Visit

Your Child’s First Dentist Visit | Austin, TX

teaching a child how to brush teeth

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child be seen within 6 months after the eruption of their first tooth but no later than their first birthday. The purpose of these early visits is to get your child comfortable with our office and team and help them get used to the idea of happy dental visits.

As a practice that specializes in children’s dentistry, our team has many years of experience in catering to the unique needs of young children. We know how to interact with kids on their level so we can explain what we’re doing in a fun and non-threatening manner. Each child receives a thorough examination to check hygiene, growth and development, and their first cleaning.

Your Child’s First Visit

Many people who suffer with dental anxiety had a negative experience as a child. It’s our responsibility to do everything possible to make sure your child doesn’t get the idea that visiting the dentist is something to worry about. Their early visits help to establish the idea that dental care isn’t anything to be afraid of.

We’ve found that it’s helpful to give your child a pre-examination tour of our practice. During this tour your child will get to meet our staff and take a look around our office. This visit establishes a sense of trust and security for your child before they come in for their first “official” visit which we like to call their ABC Visit.

Children’s dental health at Poplin Pediatric Dentistry in Austin, TXEverything we do is meant to help your child feel positive about visiting the dentist. Dr. Poplin will take a look at their teeth and we will do a gentle cleaning and take x-rays if indicated. We don’t usually plan any significant treatment during the first visit because we want to make sure your child feels completely safe and secure.

We’ll also work with you to educate you about the steps necessary to promote your child’s oral health. During this appointment our staff will talk to you about the importance of proper brushing techniques, following a healthy diet, and the ways thumb sucking and bottle-feeding can affect your child’s teeth.
